The ‘Home’ Project: A Journey of Healing, Resilience, and Community – Interview With Alisa

Discover how personal trauma inspired the creation of the “Home” project, an initiative that blends music, psychology, and storytelling to help individuals overcome displacement and the loss of home. This transformative project fosters connection, creativity, and healing for those navigating similar challenges.

What Inspired Me to Create the “Home” Project?

The inspiration behind the “Home” project stems from both my personal psychological trauma and a heartfelt desire to support others who have lost their homes.

My personal journey began with the loss of my home during the Russian-Ukrainian war. At one point, I found myself displaced, living on the streets, and sleeping in night cafes. It was one of the most emotionally challenging times of my life, made even harder by the emotional loss of my family.

This feeling of loss was rooted in my decision to support my grandfather’s country, Ukraine, while my mother and other relatives preferred Russia. This caused misunderstandings, sorrow, and tears during a time of great hardship.

Beyond my personal story, I wanted to create something meaningful for people from all over the world who have faced displacement or the loss of a place they once called home. This project is my way of fostering a sense of connection and healing for those in similar situations.

The Main Goal of the “Home” Initiative

The “Home” project aims to provide a safe space for individuals to share their stories, process their emotions, and heal through creative expression. It combines music, psychology, and storytelling to create a transformative experience for participants.

The Role of Music

Music is at the heart of this initiative. It evokes powerful emotions, connects people, and helps them find solace. Songs like “Home” by Depeche Mode and “Home” by Whitney Houston were carefully chosen for their ability to reflect the emotional complexities associated with the concept of “home.”

The Role of Psychology

Psychological support is a key component of the project. Through tools like art therapy (drawing and music), participants can reflect, cope with loss, and build resilience.

The Role of Storytelling

Storytelling allows participants to share their unique experiences of displacement and loss. By connecting through personal narratives, we foster empathy, build community, and help people feel less alone.

Why “Home” by Depeche Mode and Whitney Houston?

These two songs were selected for their profound emotional resonance:

  • Depeche Mode’s “Home” explores the longing for a safe haven and the pain of feeling lost.
  • Whitney Houston’s “Home” emphasizes the strength found in adversity and the hope of creating a new home in unexpected places.

Participants can reflect on these songs, exploring their favorite lyrics and how the messages connect with their personal experiences.

How Artists and Readers Can Get Involved

The “Home” project welcomes individuals and creatives to join in various ways:

  • Share Your Story: Submit personal stories about displacement or the loss of home through writing, art, or music.
  • Contribute Creatively: Artists and musicians can share original works inspired by the themes of “Home.”
  • Volunteer: Assist with outreach, event planning, or content creation.
  • Spread the Word: Help us reach more people by sharing this project within your network.
  • Collaborate: Partner with us if your organization aligns with our mission.

Dream House Exercise

One unique activity in the project is the “Dream House” exercise. Participants explore whether the house they lost was their dream home or simply a place tied to meaningful memories. Through this exercise, people reflect on what made their house special and envision their ideal home.

A Message to Those Experiencing Displacement

If you are currently facing the loss of your “home,” remember that you are not alone. Your story matters, and your emotions are valid.

This project is here to offer support, understanding, and a sense of community. Together, we can rebuild, heal, and create new homes—within ourselves and with others.

As Whitney Houston sings, “Home is where the heart is.”

By structuring this project around empathy, creativity, and healing, I hope to make a difference in the lives of those who have experienced the loss of “home.”
