He Thought He Might Lose Her. Instead, She Inspired His Most Personal Song Yet: How Michael Cates Honored His Wife in “She’s My Summer” (Exclusive Interview)

Michael Cates featured in an exclusive Pump It Up Magazine interview discussing the inspiration behind his song “She’s My Summer,” a heartfelt tribute to his wife rooted in love, faith, and gratitude.

Some songs entertain. Others inspire. Michael Cates’ latest release, “She’s My Summer,” manages to do both while carrying something far more meaningful beneath the surface—a deeply personal story of love, faith, gratitude, and resilience.

Contemporary jazz artist Michael Cates continues to connect with listeners through music rooted in authenticity, emotion, and life experience.

Known for his distinctive saxophone-driven contemporary jazz sound, Cates has spent decades building an impressive career that includes performing alongside some of the biggest names in music. Yet despite his professional accomplishments, “She’s My Summer” feels refreshingly personal. Rather than chasing trends, Cates delivers a heartfelt musical message rooted in real-life experience.

From the opening notes, the song radiates warmth, optimism, and emotional sincerity. The melody unfolds with a cinematic quality that evokes memories of summer evenings, cherished moments, and enduring companionship. While the arrangement showcases Cates’ signature musicianship, it is the emotional honesty behind the composition that truly sets it apart.

What listeners may not realize at first is that the song was written during one of the most challenging periods of the artist’s life. As revealed in our exclusive interview below, Cates’ wife—his inspiration for the song—was diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening tumor shortly before their 29th wedding anniversary.

Thankfully, following successful surgery and recovery, the couple emerged stronger than ever and now prepare to celebrate 30 years of marriage together.

Suddenly, the title “She’s My Summer” takes on a much deeper meaning.

This is not simply a romantic song. It is a tribute to gratitude. It is a reminder to appreciate the people we love while we have them. It is a reflection on how quickly life can change and how important it is to focus on what truly matters.

Musically, the track continues Cates’ commitment to creating contemporary jazz that feels authentic rather than formulaic. His saxophone work remains expressive and confident, serving the song rather than overshadowing it. The production is polished and inviting, allowing the emotion behind the composition to remain front and center.

At Pump It Up Magazine, we often look for music that not only sounds good but leaves listeners with something meaningful to carry forward. “She’s My Summer” succeeds because it connects personal storytelling with universal emotion. Whether you’re celebrating a long-term relationship, overcoming adversity, or simply reflecting on life’s blessings, there is something in this song that resonates.

In a world filled with distractions, Michael Cates offers a timely reminder that love, gratitude, faith, and perseverance remain among life’s greatest gifts.

Exclusive Interview with Michael Cates

Pump It Up Magazine: For readers discovering you for the first time, how would you describe your musical journey?

Michael Cates: It’s a journey of great abundance for the most part. Consequently, it can, and it will at times, become void of substance. I’ve been competing in this arena most of my life and living through its progression. Violent ups and downs, like desert landscapes with one’s self along for the ride.

That, of course, is the myopic point of view. When you step outside of this and view its totality, it’s more like this: “A dream that you live through daily,” of which I’d change nothing. My journey through music is a blessing from above, and I would be an ungrateful recipient to squander such an amazing opportunity.

I started professionally as a session player at a Black music record label with a prominent studio. As a young white guy from New Jersey, I found immediate acceptance, sharing a mutual love for the music. Furthermore, I was getting on-the-job training, so to speak, from Grammy winners and producers that would become priceless moving forward in my career.

Pump It Up Magazine: Your new single, “She’s My Summer,” has a romantic and cinematic feel. What inspired the song?

Michael Cates: There’s so much to answer, and I will attempt to be concise. Suffice it to say my wife is the catalyst behind everything romantic. It’s been this way from the start of our own 30-year journey together.

Pump It Up Magazine: Is there a special story or moment behind the creation of “She’s My Summer”?

Michael Cates: As it goes, I’m no stranger to the realities of life, having also been a veteran both foreign and domestic. I’d like to think I’m “steeled” when it hits the fan.

Now roll this scene: the love of your life, the constant force of love in your existence, has been diagnosed with a potentially fatal tumor growing in her spinal canal, and it’s diagnosed about a week before your 29th anniversary. I was completing my fifth album, titled Us, at the time. We were approaching the turning point of which I couldn’t have been any less ready for.

Cut to the post-surgery scene, and I can now say that by the grace of God Almighty, the uninvited enemy was neutralized and sent straight to hell by the hands of the world-famous surgeon Dr. Joseph Beshay.

On August 8, 2026, we will celebrate our 30th anniversary in health and peace of mind.

So the summer in “She’s My Summer” is my precious wife. The song is romantic, yes, but it’s more than that. It’s written from the heart and at a time when there was an absence of fear and much joy ahead.

Pump It Up Magazine: What emotions or message do you hope listeners take away from this release?

Michael Cates: I would hope that it evokes the passions that are at the surface in their relationships but are often overlooked because of distractions.

Distractions are a killer too, as much as any disease can be. They can teleport you to a place of separation which will carry resentment as a byproduct.

Love your spouse or significant other and forget all the garbage that is made up of meaningless obstacles.

Pump It Up Magazine: How does “She’s My Summer” reflect where you are today as an artist and composer?

Michael Cates: I compete for chart position in the smooth jazz category, but this nomenclature does not define me.

I create instrumental, saxophone-led music with an emphasis on contemporary jazz. That gives me the freedom to create what the Creator has put into my soul.

So “Summer” is another phrase or overt communication captured and released to the world, and nothing more. There’s no secret message or hidden goal, just a song of deep affection to the woman that I’ve pledged my life to.

As an artist should, I continue to evolve and travel down the trails of least explored areas, which exemplifies growth. I’ll never stop growing or learning.

Michael Cates has built a remarkable career as a saxophonist, composer, producer, and performer, sharing stages with some of music’s most iconic artists while continuing to forge his own path in contemporary jazz.

Michael Cates opens up about love, faith, healing, and the true story behind “She’s My Summer.”

Pump It Up Magazine: You’ve shared the stage with artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, Barry White, Tina Turner, and Mariah Carey. What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

Michael Cates: I always defer to this when asked similar questions regarding lessons learned—it’s work ethic.

They all have exceptional work ethic. Enforcing a stellar work ethic in my day-to-day exchanges professionally is what I obsess over.

These great artists, as most of the greats do, have a superior work ethic. Always give whomever you are working for much more than they expected.

That means be early, look and sound great, and play like it’s your last chance at bat. Knock it so far out of the park that they will never forget your name.

Pump It Up Magazine: Many fans remember your role as the saxophonist on Ally McBeal. How did that experience influence your musical path?

Michael Cates: What it did was open many closed doors for me.

In reality, it was an acting gig and something I do professionally, but I wasn’t relocating the homeless or performing life-saving surgery. It matters very little in the scope of life.

However, it opened doors to producers and directors that wouldn’t have given me the time of day. It also became another phase in learning what goes into video production, something that I’m heavily involved in today.

Michael Cates brings emotion and authenticity to every performance, blending contemporary jazz, smooth jazz, and heartfelt storytelling through his signature saxophone sound.

Pump It Up Magazine: Your recent releases have performed exceptionally well on smooth jazz charts worldwide. What do you think resonates most with your audience?

Michael Cates: Since you asked, I will be blunt. I don’t sound like everyone else, and my music is my own.

That comes at a price too. There’s so much music that I have that will never touch the radio airwaves because it’s not enough of this or enough of that.

Smooth jazz music is programmed by few, and it’s nepotistic in nature. That’s life in the fast lane.

However, streaming is the great equalizer, as is social media, and it dwarfs terrestrial radio. That delivery system will become integral in chart reporting in the immediate future, and all the crying and resistance will have to take a seat.

The people have spoken.

Pump It Up Magazine: As a composer, producer, engineer, and performer, how do you stay creative and inspired after so many years in the industry?

Michael Cates: God is the greatest composer, and He delegates talent to people. I don’t question the Boss.

I believe that you’re born with a job to communicate that which you have inside.

People that have music running through their heads all day know what I’m talking about. It’s been playing in there since I was a baby.

Creativity comes from being a superlative listener. We are an amalgamation of everything we have heard at some point.

I do a lot of listening and way more putting it all into action.

Pump It Up Magazine: What’s next for Michael Cates, and what can fans look forward to following “She’s My Summer”?

Michael Cates: I’ve recently signed on with a manager who has three Grammys, maybe more, and countless platinum records to his credit.

He believes in me and has changed much of my thought process almost overnight.

We have several tracks completed, in addition to two more full albums waiting to be released. There are full-length videos in production as well.

I’ve also jumped back into the acting world and have started reading for some hit television shows. I can’t say more than that at this time, but keep an eye on MichaelCates.com and follow me on Instagram at @michaelcatesmusic.
