Robbie Love Isn’t Chasing Trends—She’s Carrying a Legacy Forward – Exclusive Interview

In today’s music industry, it seems everyone is chasing the next viral moment.

A trending sound. A catchy hook. A social media challenge.

But every now and then, an artist reminds us that great music isn’t about trends—it’s about truth.

That is exactly what I experienced while listening to JUST ROBBIE, the new EP from Robbie Love.

As the daughter of legendary Los Angeles soul singer Mary Love, Robbie carries a musical legacy that many artists could only dream of inheriting. Yet what impressed me most wasn’t her family history. It was her willingness to step out from under that legacy and introduce herself on her own terms.

That’s what JUST ROBBIE feels like.

Not a tribute.

Not a comparison.

Not an attempt to recreate the past.

It’s a statement of identity.

From the opening notes, listeners are greeted with rich musicianship, soulful vocals, thoughtful songwriting, and a level of artistic maturity that feels increasingly rare in today’s music landscape. Rather than trying to fit into whatever sound is currently dominating streaming platforms, Robbie embraces timeless elements of R&B, Soul, and Jazz while still sounding contemporary and relevant.

And honestly?

That’s refreshing.

“At the heart of this project is love, my family legacy, and the belief that music can bring people together.” — Robbie Love

A Soulful Project Built on Authenticity

One thing that stood out to me throughout the EP is how intentional everything feels.

The musicianship is polished without sounding overproduced.

The vocals are powerful without feeling forced.

The emotions are genuine without becoming overly dramatic.

There is a warmth throughout this project that makes you feel as though you’re sitting in the room with the musicians rather than listening through a playlist algorithm.

The standout single, “When Love Comes Around,” captures that feeling perfectly

Robbie Love’s JUST ROBBIE EP blends timeless R&B, Soul, and Jazz influences into a heartfelt musical journey celebrating love, legacy, and authentic storytelling.

Rather than presenting love as some unattainable fantasy, Robbie explores the quieter side of love—the gratitude, peace, comfort, and consistency that often define meaningful relationships.

It’s soulful.

It’s relatable.

And perhaps most importantly, it’s honest.

More Than Music: Storytelling for a New Generation

What truly separates JUST ROBBIE from many independent releases is the team’s commitment to storytelling.

In an era where attention spans are short, Robbie Love and her creative team have found innovative ways to deepen audience engagement through Video Liner Notes and the film noir-inspired short film, GET IN THE CAR.

The concept is smart.

Instead of simply releasing songs and hoping listeners connect, the project creates an entire experience around the music.

The Video Liner Notes provide insight into the songs and musicians behind the recordings, while GET IN THE CAR uses humor, creativity, and cinematic storytelling to explore the challenges independent artists face while navigating today’s music industry.

It’s ambitious.

It’s entertaining.

And most importantly, it works.

Robbie Love featured in an exclusive Pump It Up Magazine interview discussing her JUST ROBBIE EP, family legacy, soul music influences, and independent artist journey.
Robbie Love opens up about her soulful new EP JUST ROBBIE, honoring her mother Mary Love’s legacy, collaborating with jazz legends, and creating music that speaks from the heart.

Exclusive Interview with Robbie Love

PIUM:

Your mother, Mary Love, left a lasting impact on the Los Angeles R&B scene. What does it mean to you to carry on that musical legacy through your own work?

Robbie Love:

I lived with my mother’s musical legacy my whole life. It’s my musical foundation. Her powerful vocals, songwriting ability, and stage presence made a huge impact on me as a singer, songwriter, and performer.

I grew up during a pivotal time in R&B Soul music, that gave me a deep appreciation for authentic musicianship, connecting with an audience, and a longing to create my own compositions, to share my story.

PIUM:

The title of your EP is JUST ROBBIE. Why was it important to introduce yourself to listeners in this way, and what does the title represent both personally and artistically?

Robbie Love:

I grew up in a rock & roll household with a mother who is known all over the world. I am automatically under a microscope of comparison.

Although I carry the “Love” name and legacy forward, it is important that I establish myself as the artist, woman, and the individual I am.

I do thank God that I decided to take on my mother’s name “Love”. She pleaded with me to do so before she transitioned, and it is my honor, and my life’s mission to keep her name alive through me, and every new venture I embark on.

PIUM:

“When Love Comes Around” has become the focus track from the project. What inspired the song, and why do you think it is resonating with audiences today?

Robbie Love:

The melody came first. I was reflecting on what love is and how it manifests.

For me, it feels like gratitude for the warmth and peace someone brings to your life and the clarity that true love brings.

It’s also recognizing the different ways that love comes around! It’s not always immediate fiery passion, it’s sometimes quiet, calm but constant.

PIUM:

The EP features collaborations with acclaimed musicians, including Azar Lawrence and Grammy-winning Jazz Master Gary Bartz. What was it like working with these artists, and how did they help shape the sound and vision of the project?

Robbie Love:

WOW! So amazing having these titans on the project. Musicians of their caliber contributed to the project in a special way.

They understand the connection between R&B, soul with jazz authenticity that brought another level of creativity to the recordings.

I’m grateful for every musician involved that helped create this magical musical experience.

PIUM:

Your reimagined version of Wayne Shorter’s “Infant Eyes” offers a fresh perspective on a beloved classic. What inspired you to revisit this composition, and what did you hope to bring to it as an artist?

Robbie Love:

“Infant Eyes” represents the connection between jazz, soul, and emotion.

It is such a beautiful composition, and we wanted to honor the spirit of the original while bringing our own interpretation to it.

Having Azar Lawrence playing Soprano Saxophone on the recording made it even more meaningful.

What really resonates with me is how the lyrical content organically connects with my musical roots, and how it honors my mother’s eternal love for her children, and for the gift of musical expression.

Music has always been central to our family.

PIUM:

One of the most innovative aspects of this campaign is the use of Video Liner Notes. How did this concept come about, and why was it important to create a deeper connection between the music and the audience?

Robbie Love:

Juewett Bostick who spearheaded this project came up with the video liner ideas which I think is brilliant!

Today, people experience music through many different platforms, especially their phones and digital devices.

The idea was to create content that allows people to engage with the project wherever they are.

Each video adds another layer to the listening experience and gives fans a chance to explore the musicianship, creativity, and stories behind the songs.

PIUM:

In the short film GET IN THE CAR, viewers witness a tense yet humorous confrontation between Jack Rafferty and Kim Thick over how Robbie Love’s music should be marketed. What inspired this film noir-style parody?

Robbie Love:

Once again, Juewett Bostick’s dark wit and humor contributed to this film noir-style parody.

It highlights some of the challenges independent artists must endure when trying to break into the music industry.

We wanted it done with humor, imagination, and entertainment while exposing some of the deeper realities of the music business.

PIUM:

The music industry can be demanding. What practices help you stay grounded and protect your creative energy?

Robbie Love:

I actively do meditations, practicing calm.

I focus on surrounding myself with people with positive energy and keeping my thoughts positive.

When you trust who you are, you stand on principles and character that carry you.

It grounds you in peace and understanding, and life seems to have a positive flow.

PIUM:

Looking ahead, what do you hope listeners take away from JUST ROBBIE?

Robbie Love:

I hope they appreciate what we are trying to deliver.

It’s quality R&B, Soul with a sprinkle of Jazz. It’s musical Gumbo!

I hope it brings joy and a deep look into my life.

At the heart of this project is love, my family legacy and belief that music can bring people together.

I want them to listen to my heart and feel my life experiences in every song.

Final Thoughts

What I appreciate most about Robbie Love is that she isn’t trying to be anyone else.

In a world where artists are constantly told to follow trends, chase algorithms, and reinvent themselves every six months, Robbie has chosen authenticity.

And authenticity never goes out of style.

JUST ROBBIE is a reminder that great music is still built on strong songwriting, real emotion, skilled musicianship, and meaningful storytelling.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of classic soul, a lover of contemporary R&B, or simply someone searching for music with substance, this EP deserves your attention.
