About Oleg Reksha

Oleg Reksha is an engineering leader, international speaker, and advisor focused on leadership, performance, and responsible AI integration in technology teams.

He has led engineering teams across enterprise and startup environments, served as technical lead on mobile and backend initiatives, and acted as Chief Technology Officer at a pre-seed startup where he oversaw architecture and product development.

Oleg speaks about how modern engineering organizations can adopt emerging technologies — including AI — without sacrificing critical thinking, team autonomy, or long-term capability.


Interview

1. What first inspired your passion for engineering leadership and emerging technologies like AI?

Oleg Reksha:
“My passion has always been building useful things. I see leadership as a great example of how you can make a bigger impact than just writing code. You help people who are smarter than you build things you wouldn’t be able to build alone.

Any piece of technology that helps do this better inspires me, as long as people can continue building great things.”


2. Your keynote at WMF 2026 focuses on “How AI Is Changing Engineering Leadership.” What are the biggest shifts leaders should be preparing for right now?

Oleg Reksha:
“AI is a multiplier. It amplifies everything, both good and bad. Every aspect is exaggerated: the speed of software development, but also the imposter syndrome within a team.

If you have good processes and practices in place, they become great, but at the same time, any small defect can turn into a major issue.

And, of course, the perception of AI is changing. Some people are scared of it, and our main task is to show that AI is not a replacement for humans – it’s an evolution of the profession.”


3. How can companies integrate AI into engineering teams without losing creativity, critical thinking, or human collaboration?

Oleg Reksha:
“I believe AI is the exact opposite of ‘losing creativity.’ It allows us to conduct investigations in minutes and build prototypes in hours, acting as a massive creativity booster.

Critical thinking is becoming crucial to challenge the solutions AI proposes and push them further.

Collaboration is more important than ever; the best ideas to validate are born during collaboration, discussions, and disputes.

However, this requires companies to have a clear vision of what they want to achieve with AI and what is actually possible.”


4. Many professionals are excited about AI, while others fear it. What mindset should leaders adopt during this technological transition?

Oleg Reksha:
“In my experience, there are two types of engineers. The first type enjoys building things; they are result-oriented. Now, they have a new tool that allows them to build faster and do more, which makes them excited.

The second type enjoys the process of building. They loved writing code and optimizing it, and these people have lost some of the fun in their daily work.

At the same time, fear is driven by headlines like, ‘AI will replace everyone.’

As leaders, we should encourage AI adoption, but we must ensure we do it with a human-centric approach. Artificial intelligence won’t replace humans, but it will definitely change our professions.”


5. What are some common mistakes organizations make when implementing AI into software development and engineering workflows?

Oleg Reksha:
“The most common mistake I’ve seen so far is a lack of vision on how to use AI.

Top leaders hold meetings where they say, ‘We need to be 10x faster. Use AI!’

As a result, people try to apply new technology in random places and obviously get random results.

Having a solid plan across different organizational levels, putting education in place, and listening to employees’ needs are the key factors for success.”


6. How do you personally balance innovation, performance, and responsible leadership in high-pressure environments?

Oleg Reksha:
“I’ve noticed that you can’t grow a tree from a seed overnight. Everything requires time and care.

Innovations need to be introduced the right way; I have to understand how they work and how they can genuinely help.

My approach is to observe, analyze, and only then improve.

The main idea is not to rush – do it smarter, not faster, and you will win in the long run.”


7. In your opinion, what human skills will become even more valuable as AI continues advancing?

Oleg Reksha:
“I believe the most important skills right now are healthy skepticism, critical thinking, and curiosity.

By nature, we tend to believe things that are stated with confidence, and the issue is that AI is always confident in its proposed solutions.

Validation is now the most critical part of the job.”


8. How can engineering leaders create healthy and adaptable teams during times of rapid technological change?

Oleg Reksha:
“We are leaders only as long as we have people to lead.

Technological changes are meant to improve things. We need to have open, ongoing discussions about what we can improve with these new technologies.

Listen to the people on the ground and solve their issues. It’s as simple as that.”


9. What advice would you give to young developers and future tech leaders entering the AI era?

Oleg Reksha:
“For young developers: stop being developers, and start being engineers.

There is a big difference in the scope of vision between the two. Developers write code; engineers solve problems.

For future tech leaders, the advice remains the same: your task is to lead people, not to serve as an AI advocate.”


10. Looking ahead, how do you see AI transforming the future of software development and leadership over the next 5-10 years?

Oleg Reksha:
“We are just moving to the next level of abstraction.

It removes the need for deep knowledge of syntax but adds the need to understand guardrails, human-in-the-loop systems, and whatever follows in the future.

From a leadership point of view, it’s likely the same as it has been for thousands of years: make sure you understand and cover the needs of the people you lead, remove obstacles on their path to the goal, and surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.”


11. At Pump It Up Magazine, we also focus on wellness, mindset, and personal growth. In a fast-moving AI world, how can leaders and developers protect their mental well-being while continuing to innovate and perform at a high level?

Oleg Reksha:
“Keep in mind that AI is not a replacement for humans, but another tool to help us work faster and more efficiently together.

Collaboration and innovation should be synonymous.

This is a revolution, and every revolution is like a tsunami – it runs over and sweeps away everything in its path. We need to make sure we stay afloat and figure out how to rebuild things in a better way.

Focus on goals rather than noise, on values rather than just income, and on learnings rather than losses.”
