Pump It Up Magazine: Congratulations on the release of Two Seasoned Women of Cloverson, Texas. What inspired you to write this story?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: I was born and raised in a small Texas town, where I was surrounded by fascinating Black women—especially my mother, who was sweet, plain-spoken, and just a little rough around the edges. As a curious child, I loved observing the women in beauty salons and at church, watching how they interacted, supported one another, and sometimes challenged each other.
The beauty salon, in particular, was like a weekly therapy session. The women laughed, aired their frustrations, and offered one another advice and comfort when needed. I would sit quietly, listening to their stories. Those moments became a rich education about humor, friendship, and community.
I carried those childhood memories with me for years. The various personalities, conversations, and life lessons of those remarkable women stayed in my heart and eventually became the inspiration for Two Seasoned Women of Cloverson, Texas. Their voices and spirit helped shape the characters and the backdrop of my novel.
Pump It Up Magazine: Please introduce readers to Lois and Cat. How would you describe their personalities and lifelong friendship?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: Lois will win readers over with her sweet, plain-spoken, rough-around-the-edges country charm. She’s the kind of woman who stands by the people she loves, and approaches life with quiet strength. Cat is her absolute counterpart. With her spicy, effervescent personality and delightfully unfiltered tongue, she’ll have you chuckling one moment and laughing out loud the next.
Their friendship began in grade school and has endured a lifetime of joys, hardships, and unwavering loyalty. They’ve showed up for each other, year after year. Their relationship is the heart of the story and a reminder that some friendships are like family.
Pump It Up Magazine: Why was it important for you to center the story around two mature Black women?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: Through Lois and Cat, I wanted to celebrate the strength, humor, resilience, and determination of these Black women who relied on each other, proving that true friendship can be one of life’s greatest gifts.
Pump It Up Magazine: The novel is set in a small Southern town during an oil and gas boom. Why did you choose this setting, and how does it shape the story?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: I grew up during the oil and gas boom of the 1960s, when landmen traveled the Texas countryside leasing mineral rights for oil exploration. As a child, I noticed they approached White families but never my family or many other Black landowners. I also remember listening to my parents talk about how life-changing it could have been if they had been given the same opportunity to benefit financially from oil discovered on their property.
Those memories stayed with me and became an important part of the novel’s setting. The oil boom represents more than economic opportunity—it also reflects the inequalities that existed in many small Southern communities. By placing Lois and Cat in that world, I was able to explore how race, wealth, and opportunity shaped everyday lives.
The story also comes full circle when in 2012, Lois and her siblings finally experienced oil exploration eventually reaching their family property. That moment symbolizes delayed opportunity and the hope that, even after many years, justice and blessings can arrive.
Pump It Up Magazine: The book blends humor, friendship, secrets, business challenges, and tragedy. How did you balance these different emotions?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: Life is rarely made up of just one emotion. Even during difficult times, we can find a reason to laugh, lean on our friends, and keep it moving. I wanted the novel to reflect that.

Bobbie Jo Woolbright: Lois and Cat were inspired by two remarkable women who left a lasting impression on me. I wanted to contrast the gentle personality of my mother with the spirited, outspoken nature of another woman in my hometown. Although Lois and Cat were very different, they had been close friends since grade school. Their strong bond and unwavering loyalty, my novel’s central themes, allowed them to navigate the challenges of the male-dominated business dealings in their community during the Texas oil and gas boom.
Pump It Up Magazine: What message do you hope readers take away about loyalty, forgiveness, friendship, and second chances?
Bobbie Jo Woolbright: I hope readers come away believing that genuine friendship is one of life’s greatest blessings. Lois and Cat never lose their sense of who they are. Through laughter, heartbreak, triumphs, and disappointments, they remain loyal to one another, encourage each other, break bread together, and never hesitate to express their love and admiration.
Their story reminds us that true friendship isn’t built on perfection—it’s built on grace, trust, and the willingness to stand by each other through the ups and downs of life. My hope is that readers will close the book with a renewed appreciation for the relationships that sustain us and the joy that comes from loving people authentically.

Bobbie Jo Woolbright is a storyteller whose life reflects courage, determination, and the power of dreaming beyond one’s circumstances. Born and raised in the rural countryside of a small, segregated Texas town, she grew up surrounded by both natural beauty and the painful realities of racial inequality.
As the first Black student to attend her small-town high school during its first year of integration, Woolbright stepped into unfamiliar territory with confidence, supported by the strength and encouragement of her parents. That formative experience helped shape the resilience, compassion, and emotional insight she now brings to her writing.
After graduating, she pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and later a Master of Science in Management Information Systems. She went on to build a successful career in technology and education, yet the dream of becoming an author remained close to her heart.
