“Things About to Change” by Baby T: A Bold Hip-Hop Anthem for Healing, Truth, and Transformation

BABY t - A MAN with long dreadlocks and gold chain

When an artist releases a song that hits you right in the chest — that makes you feel something deep — you know it’s more than just music. It’s truth. And Baby T’s latest single, “Things About to Change,” is exactly that. Inspired by the revolutionary spirit of KRS-ONE, this track doesn’t just speak on change — it is change.

We caught up with Baby T to talk about the fire behind the lyrics, the emotional weight of his upcoming album “40,” and the hope he carries — not just for music, but for mental clarity, self-awareness, and healing.

Pump It Up Magazine:
“Things About to Change” opens with real urgency — it feels like a breakthrough moment. Was this track born out of a personal turning point for you, emotionally or mentally? What needed to change for you, personally?

👉Baby T: Absolutely — “Things About to Change” came from a very raw and real place. I was at a point in my life where I felt like I’d hit a wall emotionally, mentally, and even creatively. There was this buildup of pressure—juggling personal responsibilities, expectations, and the pace of my career—and something inside me finally cracked open. I realized I couldn’t keep carrying the same weight without shifting something, whether that was how I showed up for myself, or how I let people into my world.

But beyond just my personal life, I was also looking at the state of hip-hop and feeling a deep frustration. To me, it felt like the heart and soul of the genre had gotten lost—too much focus on the surface, not enough substance. I missed the feeling of urgency, truth, and storytelling that originally pulled me in. I knew if I was going to keep creating, I had to stand for something and bring that back.)

Pump It Up Magazine:
You were inspired by KRS-ONE’s message about awareness leading to revolution — and that kind of awareness often starts within. How does mental and emotional health play a role in your creative process and your message as an artist?

👉Baby T: (KRS-ONE’s message really resonated with me because real revolution starts with self-awareness. For me, mental and emotional health are at the core of my creative process. If I’m not in tune with what I’m really feeling, the art doesn’t connect — not with me, and not with anyone else.

There was a time I tried to push through everything without slowing down, and the work suffered for it. Once I started being honest with myself, the music got more real. That awareness—that vulnerability—isn’t weakness. It’s where the power starts.)

Pump It Up Magazine:
Your album “40” explores deep themes — growth, loss, legacy. That’s heavy and healing at the same time. How did facing your own struggles shape the storytelling in this project? And how did music help you process it all?

👉Baby T: (“40” is more than just an album — it’s a reflection of everything I’ve carried, survived, and grown through. Turning 40 made me stop and ask: what do I want to leave behind? What’s my purpose in this space, in this culture, in this moment?

A lot of the songs came from sitting with pain — losses I hadn’t processed, silence I hadn’t spoken into, and growth that didn’t come easy. Tracks like “What It Is” and “Be There” were written in real time while navigating grief, change, and that uncomfortable but necessary self-check.

Songs like “Sketch Pad” and “Old Soul” were written on the beach in Jamaica during a personal trip I called “Disconnect & Reconnect.” I stepped away from the world, spent time in silence, reflected on my life — and reconnected with the version of myself I’d almost lost. Once I found that voice again, I couldn’t stop writing. And the result… was 40.)

Pump It Up Magazine:
Collaborating with Fruit Vendor and Dream Life brought such a beautiful energy to the track. Did those creative moments feel healing or therapeutic in any way? What kind of space did you all create for vulnerability in the studio?

👉Baby T: (Absolutely — I originally wrote and recorded the hook myself, but after hearing KRS-ONE’s “Things Are About to Change” from The Mixtape, I knew I needed something different. Something raw. Something hip-hop. At first, I imagined a Lenny Kravitz vibe — even considered a guitar solo. But then I found Fruit Vendor on Fiverr, and it was one of the best creative decisions I’ve ever made. His voice reminded me of those early Beastie Boys records, and he brought a completely unique energy to the track.

As for the beat — I discovered Dream Life’s production about two years ago. I didn’t know if it would ever fit anything I was doing. Then one day, on a road trip, KRS-ONE’s The Mixtape came on, and I lost my mind. The concept, the sound, the urgency — it all clicked. That beat finally had a purpose. The rest was history.)

Pump It Up Magazine:
So many people are struggling with identity, pressure, and mental health right now. When someone hears “Things About to Change” for the first time — maybe at their lowest point — what do you hope they feel? What do you want to tell them through this music?

👉 Baby T:

I want them to feel like they’re not invisible. That they’re not alone. That whatever pressure they’re carrying — identity, survival, silence, loss — it’s real, but it’s not the end. “Things About to Change” is more than a title… it’s a promise.

I’ve been there — where it feels like everything is closing in. And that’s why I wrote this the way I did. So if someone hears it at their lowest, I want them to hear my voice like a friend saying, “You still got fight in you.” Because the moment you believe things can change… that’s when they start to.

This song is the starting line. Not the finish.)
