Who Is Michael Cates?

Michael Cates is more than just a saxophonist — he’s a dynamic performer, composer, and actor with decades of experience lighting up stages and screens. Born in New Jersey and raised on the energy of the Jersey Shore music scene, Cates began playing the saxophone at just eight years old. His passion quickly turned into a career, touring the East and West Coasts, working as a sideman in major studios, and eventually making his mark in Los Angeles.
He gained national fame performing as the on-screen saxophonist on the hit TV show Ally McBeal, a role he held for five seasons as part of the David E. Kelley production. A long-time member of the Screen Actors Guild, Cates has appeared in various television shows and national commercials over the years.

Over his celebrated career, Michael Cates has performed with Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, Barry White, Joe Sample, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, and more. From BB King’s in New York to Spaghettini, the Catalina Jazz Club, and festivals across the U.S. and Europe, his presence on stage is nothing short of iconic.
