His journey began humbly, playing congas and bongos on the block with his brothers, catching the attention of neighbors who’d stop to watch. Inspired by his brother Willie’s love for African rhythms, young Al found his groove early on. But it wasn’t until a teenage heartbreak at age 14 that he wrote his very first song — raw, honest, and real. That moment lit a fire.

From forming a street corner singing group called The 4 Aces, to self-teaching himself piano chords on a humble keyboard, Al poured himself into songwriting. He wasn’t classically trained — he was heart-trained. And that’s what makes his work resonate so deeply today.
