There are rare moments when a song stops you in your tracks… makes you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and just feel. That’s exactly what happened the first time I heard Heidi Tann’s new single, “You’re The Best Thing.”
I knew right away—I had to share this with you.
Who Is Heidi Tann?

In Heidi’s Words:
“I’ve been mentored and lifted up by so many wonderful people throughout my journey. It all started back in the Philippines with my uncle, Romy San Mateo, an incredible piano player and arranger who believed in me early on. I’m grateful to Rex Salas for producing my first album, my collaboration with Nils,Kinsman Dazz Band, Mike Harrison, Lin Roundtree, and Bruno Nesci, my bass player and graphic designer. A huge thank you to Nancy Ellinger, who captures me so beautifully through her photography, and to my amazing daughter Hannah, who writes all my press releases with so much love. And of course—my family, the radio stations and DJs, and all the incredible listeners who’ve helped put my songs on charts around the world.
I’m truly blessed to have all of you on my side.” – Heidi Tann

Questions and Answers for Pump It Up Magazine
Q: 1. When did you first fall in love with music—and how did it all begin for you in the Philippines?
– My love for music began when I was just five years old. I remember being captivated as I listened to my aunties play the piano and hearing old standard jazz tunes on the radio. Those sounds sparked something in me—I started teaching myself how to play the piano by ear. Music was always around me growing up. My uncle was one of the Philippines’ well-known pianists at the time and mentored many respected artists. My mother also sang in a piano bar, so I was constantly surrounded by music and creativity. That early exposure planted the seeds for what would become a lifelong passion.
2. What’s it like being a woman in the indie music world? Any lessons or wins you’d love to share?
– Being a woman in the indie music world is both empowering and challenging. As an independent artist, you’re not just the performer—you’re also the manager, marketer, creative director, and decision-maker. It takes resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of purpose. I’ve learned that staying true to your voice and trusting your instincts is essential, especially in an industry that can sometimes try to mold you into something you’re not. Being authentic in your intentions makes a big difference.
One of my biggest wins has been the ability to create and release music on my own terms. Collaborating with talented artists and producers who truly respect my vision has been incredibly fulfilling. I’ve also learned that everyone’s journey is different—there’s no set timeline for success. It’s important to celebrate the small wins, nurture your community, and keep moving forward, even when things get tough. Being a people person helps a lot, too. Good networking skills can open doors and build lasting relationships in this industry.
3. Your new song “You’re the Best Thing” is beautiful. What inspired it—and why release it on your birthday?
– Thank you so much! “You’re The Best Thing” is a song that comes straight from the heart. It was inspired by the people in my life who’ve shown me unwavering love, support, and kindness—those rare connections that lift you up and stay with you. I wanted to capture that feeling of deep appreciation and joy, wrapped in a smooth, soulful groove.
Releasing it on my birthday felt so fitting. Birthdays are a time of reflection and gratitude, and this song is my way of saying thank you—to my loved ones, my collaborators, and everyone who’s supported my music journey. It’s a gift from me, but also a celebration of the people who’ve been the best part of it all.
4. You’ve teamed up with some amazing artists—what’s been your favorite part of those collaborations?
– Collaborating with incredibly talented artists has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my music journey. There’s something truly special about bringing different creative minds together and watching a song evolve in unexpected ways. Each artist adds their own soul, texture, and perspective, which helps take the music to another level.
– I feel so blessed to have worked with some phenomenal musicians. A special mention to Rex Salas, who produced my first album Here Is Where We Meet—that was such a foundational moment for me. I’m also deeply grateful to Tony Garviz, Bruno Nesci, Bobby Gomez, DCat , Mike Harrison, Nils, Kinsman Dazz Band Michael J. Calhoun, Wayne Preston, Pete Tokar, Lavelle Powell, and Lin Rountree. Each of them has brought such heart and brilliance to our collaborations.
What I love most is the mutual respect and creative energy we share. When everyone brings their best and believes in the vision, it creates something powerful and lasting. That’s the magic of collaboration.
5. What do you want people to feel when they hear your new track, “You’re The Best Thing” featuring Lin Rountree?
– I want people to feel love, gratitude, and a deep sense of connection when they hear this song. “You’re The Best Thing” is all about celebrating those who bring light into our lives—the ones who make everything better just by being there. It’s a feel-good track with a heartfelt message, and I hope it makes listeners think of someone special and smile.
I’m incredibly proud of how it came together. Lin Rountree’s smooth and soulful trumpet brought so much emotion and elegance to the track. And a special mention to my music producer, Lavelle Powell, who created the wonderful backing track that gave the song its warm, lush foundation. His production truly brought the vision to life.
At its heart, this song is a love letter—wrapped in soul, jazz, and gratitude.
6. How do you stay grounded and take care of your mental health in such a busy music life?
– Staying grounded in a fast-paced music life takes intention. I’ve learned that balance is key—especially when you’re wearing many hats as an indie artist. I make time for quiet moments to recharge, whether that’s through prayer, meditation, a peaceful walk, or just unplugging for a bit to reset. My faith plays a big role in keeping me centered and grateful.
I also surround myself with positive, supportive people who remind me of my “why.” That sense of community—family, friends, fellow creatives—helps keep me anchored. And honestly, sometimes self-care means simply saying no when I need to, and protecting my time and energy.
Mental health matters, especially in an industry that can be emotionally demanding. I try to give myself grace, celebrate small wins, and stay focused on the joy of creating music that connects with others.
7. Your daughter helps with your press, and your family seems so involved—how important is that support?
– That support means everything to me. Having my daughter Hannah involved in my press and promotions has been such a blessing. She understands my vision, believes in my music, and brings a fresh, thoughtful perspective to everything she does. It’s not just about business—it’s about love and trust.
My entire family has been a strong foundation throughout my journey. Their encouragement, patience, and presence keep me grounded, especially during the busy or uncertain moments. In this industry, having a support system that truly knows you and stands by you makes all the difference. I don’t take that for granted—it’s one of the greatest gifts I have, both personally and professionally.
8 What advice would you give other indie women artists trying to stay strong and creative?
- My biggest advice is to stay true to yourself and your vision. The indie music world can be tough and sometimes overwhelming, but authenticity is your greatest strength. Be real and genuine in everything you do—trust your instincts, embrace your unique voice, and don’t be afraid to take risks.
- Build a strong support network—whether it’s friends, fellow artists, mentors, or family—who uplift you and believe in your journey. Surrounding yourself with positive energy helps fuel creativity and resilience.
- Also, prioritize self-care. Creativity flows best when you’re feeling balanced and well. Set healthy boundaries, take breaks when needed, and celebrate even the small victories. Remember, your path is your own—there’s no one right way or timeline to success. Keep pushing forward, stay inspired, and enjoy the journey.
9. Q: What’s next for you—more music, a tour, or something new we should look out for?
I’m excited about what’s coming up! This August, I’ll be performing at the Aloha Jazz Festival at the Hilton Waikiki Hotel, sharing the stage with incredible artists like Lin Rountree, Kim Scott, Nathan Mitchell, Jacob Webb, Phyllicia Rae, and many more. Shortly after, I’ll be at the Blue Note Outrigger Hotel in Waikiki, performing with Mike Lewis and his stunning 17-piece orchestra.
Looking ahead, I have a show on October 18 at View Music Bar in Torrance, CA, with Nils and Eldon Jones, plus some surprise guests to make it extra special. There’s also a possibility of performing in Oklahoma City for the New Year’s Countdown in December.
Next year is already shaping up to be busy with jazz festivals starting in February, and I’m planning to work on a local show in Manila, Philippines, which is very close to my heart.
There’s a lot of exciting music and live experiences on the horizon—I can’t wait to share them with everyone!
