Music Review: Earthquake Lights’ ‘Desert Bloom’: Blending Alt Rock with Orchestral Elements in NYC

Caucasian Men - Music Band

NYC’s Earthquake Lights have just dropped their latest album, Desert Bloom, a nine-track release that takes the band’s music to new territories as they blend alt-rock with orchestral elements. The band comprises five talented musicians who met during their time in college and have since been making waves in the music scene.

The album is named after the rare and momentary growth and flourishing of plant life in the desert, which represents the timeline and vibe of the band’s creative process for the record. Lead singer Myles Rodenhouse notes that Desert Bloom is “very much a record of deadlines and pushing our creative process forward. It was tough but really important and healthy for us because we found out a bit about ourselves and how we create.”

One of the standout tracks on the album is “Another Star,” a single inspired by the spacecraft Voyager. The song explores the concept of it being shot into space, only to someday be forgotten. Earthquake Lights explain, “It’s something that was once so relevant but has become dated and now exists far removed from anything that truly cared about it.” The track showcases impressive piano progression, melodic rhythm, and improvised drum grooves, making for a blissful listening experience.

Title track and fan favorite “Desert Bloom” has garnered over 1.7 million streams alone and charted on iTunes four separate times in the Top 40. The track is a perfect representation of Earthquake Lights’ ability to blend alt-rock with orchestral elements seamlessly. The live music video for “Desert Bloom” also showcases the band’s polished and captivating live sound.

Earthquake Lights has always been about exploring new frontiers both imaginatively and within oneself. Their first album, Distress Signals, explored being marooned out at sea, while Desert Bloom takes its name from the rare and momentary growth and flourishing of plant life in the desert. Both concepts can be interpreted as being a feeling within one’s own self, being out at open sea, or stranded in the desert. The band even explores new frontiers like space with “Another Star,” which essentially is a feeling of being forgotten.

In summary, Desert Bloom is a must-listen album for fans of alt-rock and orchestral music alike. Earthquake Lights have once again proven their ability to push creative boundaries while delivering a polished and captivating listening experience. With millions of streams and critical acclaim under their belt, Earthquake Lights is a band to watch out for in the music scene.
