Montpellier-based rock ‘n’ roll enthusiasts Les Lullies have recently unleashed their highly anticipated LP, “Mauvaise Foi,” on Slovenly Recordings International. The band’s latest offering presents a no-frills, fast-paced punk rock sound infused with occasional power-pop elements. With lyrics primarily in French, Les Lullies have elevated their music to new heights, showcasing a refined quality and a more personal touch. Drawing inspiration from Normandy’s rich musical heritage and referencing influences like The Records, The Real Kids, and Phil Spector, the band navigates seamlessly between glam-rock anthems, power-pop numbers, and classic garage-punk bangers.
“Mauvaise Foi” was recorded at Château Vergogne, starting in November 2021, with the expertise of Maxime Smadja (Rixe, BOSS, Condor, Digital Octopus). Les Lullies took their time writing, recording, and producing the album during the pandemic-induced touring hiatus. The result is a 35-minute punk and roll joyride that explores a range of topical themes, from the serious to the lighthearted. Tracks like “Soirée Standard” pay homage to the pub-goers, celebrating the necessity of letting loose and having a good time. Meanwhile, “Ville Musée” delves into the impact of gentrification, lamenting the loss of vibrant nightlife and a sense of belonging in cities increasingly tailored for tourists.
One standout moment on the album is the band’s punk/power-pop version of Jackie DeShannon’s “When You Walk in the Room,” originally covered by The Searchers. The only track sung in English, it serves as a sweet candy treat for the ears, showcasing Les Lullies’ ability to infuse their own energy and style into beloved classics.
